It is a way to meet like minded people and get local knowledge and travel tips of the area. Warmshowers is specifically made for bicycle touring, so it is easier to find hosts along cycle routes. Couchsurfing is more located in bigger towns and cities. We have used both websites mentioned above and have experienced incredible hospitality, met interesting and unique characters that have had a great impression on us.

However, if you are looking for a longer stay in an area to fully explore it or would like to learn some new skills along the journey (and do not mind undertaking some work), websites like HelpX and Workaway would be suited for you! Not only it provides you with a place to stay and meals, it also gives you a chance to really experience the life of the people you stay with. Often they might become your new long-life friends or even extended family. We have only used HelpX, and have met some truly amazing people, had learnt a lot of new skills and gained indespensible knowledge.
